To master playlist assistance in the Apple ecosystem today, you have two distinct paths depending on whether you are using the classic iTunes / Apple Music Smart Playlists system or Apple’s newly launched Playlist Playground AI feature.
Mastering Smart Playlists provides complete, rule-based control over your local library. Alternatively, Playlist Playground uses natural language AI prompts to generate mixes instantly. Method 1: Master Smart Playlists (The Original “Assist”)
Smart Playlists act as a background assistant. They automatically add or remove tracks based on live data and exact criteria you set.
[File] ➔ [New] ➔ [Smart Playlist] ➔ Define Rules ➔ Check “Live Updating” 1. Build Multi-Layered Rules Open the creator tool via File > New > Smart Playlist.
Hold the Option key (Mac) or click the + icon with the ellipsis (Windows) to nest rules. Set the primary constraint to Match all or Match any.
Combine variables like Genre is Rock + Year is in the range 1980 to 1989. 2. Prevent Track Burnout Add a rule using the Last Played or Play Count criteria. Set it to Last Played is not in the last 30 days.
This forces iTunes to constantly rotate fresh music into your rotation. 3. Filter Out the Clutter
Create a dedicated manual playlist titled “Slow Songs” or “Skippers”.
In your main Smart Playlists, add the rule: Playlist is not Slow Songs.
This keeps specific sub-genres, holiday music, or low-rated tracks out of your daily mixes. 4. Lock in Size Limits Create, delete, and use Smart Playlists in iTunes on PC
